Smithy’s tagline is “CAD for everyone.” Makers describe a part, Smithy renders it with a customized AI model, and the part can be modified before download. I wanted to make something as intuitive as Canva, and powerful enough to hand off a design file to a manufacturer.

As the founding designer, I did everything from creating a design system to using Claude Code for frontend development. I did research primarily through talks with makers and reviewing prompt logs. The user interface evolved rapidly along with the underlying technology.

Shortly after launch, Smithy became partners with one of the largest part manufacturers in the US. Smithy continues to facilitate the creation of thousands of parts every day.
